Pediatric occupational therapists work with children so that they can succeed at their occupations of school, play, activities of daily living (i.e. dressing, eating, toileting, bathing) and sleep. Through play children learn about themselves, about feelings, and begin developing understanding about their world. Sensory processing and sensory integration give the foundation for developing motor skills, good academic skills, the ability to attend, emotional regulation, and social skills. Many of the children seen at APT aren’t able to make sense out of movement or what they see, hear, or touch. With successful treatment a child can have improvement in motor coordination when performing gross and fine motor tasks. Experiencing normal responses to sensory input, instead of under- or over- reactive responses to sensory stimulation, can lead to emotional regulation, appropriate social interaction and higher self-esteem. Other possible gains might include better eating and sleep habits, increased language ability, improved academics, improved attention and better organizational skills. Occupational therapy at APT promotes the foundational skills needed for the individual to succeed in his or her everyday life by using a child-centered play approach.
